UK eVisa Transition Deadline Approaching

UK eVisa Transition Deadline Approaching & Expansion of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Scheme

eVisa Transition Deadline: December 31, 2024

All BRP cardholders must create a UKVI account and complete the eVisa process by December 31, 2024. This transition allows visa holders to manage their UKVI accounts and update personal details with ease.

Who Needs to Act?

  • All BRP cardholders.
  • UK/Irish nationals or those already with a UKVI account do not need to take action.

The Simple 3-Step eVisa Process

  1. Create a UKVI account.
  2. Verify Your Identity: Upload a copy of your passport or BRP and take a live facial photo.
  3. Link to eVisa and Submit: Once linked, your eVisa will be connected to your passport.

After submission, the Home Office will email you within a few days to confirm your eVisa is active. This simplifies international travel by linking your immigration status to your passport.

Managing Your UKVI Account

To avoid delays, keep the following details updated in your UKVI account:

  • Passport Information: Ensure accuracy, especially after a renewal or if it’s lost or stolen.
  • Dual Nationality: Update if applicable.
  • Home Address: Maintain current records.

Keeping these details up to date helps with travel, as well as Right to Work and Right to Rent checks.

Travelling with an eVisa

Key reminders:

  • You can use a valid BRP card until December 31, 2024.
  • Airlines and carriers will digitally verify your immigration status via your passport.
  • Before traveling, ensure your UKVI account and eVisa are accurate and linked to your passport.

Expansion of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Scheme

On November 27, the UK Home Office announced an extension of the ETA scheme, broadening its coverage to include additional nationalities.

Key Dates and Nationalities:

  • From January 8, 2025: Nationals from the Americas, Asia, and Oceania (e.g., USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea) will require an ETA.
  • From March 5, 2025: The scheme will expand further.
  • From April 2, 2025: EU/EEA and Swiss nationals will also require an ETA.

How the ETA Works

  • Applications are submitted via a mobile app.
  • Decisions are typically issued within 3 working days.
  • Approved ETAs are linked to passports and are valid for up to 2 years.

Travellers who apply for an ETA before departure can still enter the UK while awaiting approval if the application is pending.

What Employers Should Do

Clearview Immigration recommends employers:

  • Inform employees of these changes and encourage them to apply for an ETA in advance.
  • Plan ahead to prevent unnecessary delays for business travellers entering the UK starting January 8 and April 2.
